Stay one night, pay with...sheep?
I've always had a dream of living a life of trading goods for services and vice versa. I came close for about 6 months when I had friends working all over the city and I got free pizza, slurpees, and movie rentals. In the end though living off of slurpees and pizza may sound tasty, but really doesn't work in the staying healthy/alive department.
Then I heard about Bill Ward, a hotel owner in the UK who will let farmers who are short of cash to settle their bill with livestock. Oh yes, Ward will trade a room at the Dunsley Hall Country House Hotel in Whitby North Yorks for anything from cows, pigs, sheep, and even hay!
Normally it costs £80 a night to stay at the three star Dunsley Hall Country House Hotel in Whitby, North Yorks
Bill, 62, said: "People have been bartering since ancient times. There's no reason someone couldn't walk up to the hotel leading a cow. Trying to get a farmer to part with money is difficult and we're always looking for ways to increase trade."
I myself am not a farmer, but it is good to know if I was that I could stay at the Dunsley Hall Country House Hotel for the price of a cow. Maybe I could trade up to the presidential suite if I sweeten the pot with a prize winning Billy goat?
