Fawlty Facelift

Fawlty Towers Cast

The hotel that inspired the British comedy Fawlty Towers is about to re-launch after a $1 million makeover!

The Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay England was originally slated to be demolished by developers looking to build luxury apartments. Luckily the Torquay Council refused to give the money hungry developers permission to go ahead with their plan and flatten the pop culture landmark. Now the new owners Brian Shone and Terry Taylor have polished the old hotel and transformed it into an elegant 41-room boutique style hotel.

Actress Prunella Scales, who played Basil Fawlty's waspish wife Sybil in the comedy classic, is to commemorate the re-launch by unveiling a plaque at the hotel.

It is just too bad the hotel owners won't be requiring staff to have a similar delightfully rude demeanor that John Cleese made famous. I think it would be fun to have a Cleese-like character yelling for his wife from across the hotel lobby to answer the phone.

…Of course anyone who didn't realize where they were staying would be in for quite a shock when the desk clerk started throwing papers at them.
