Keeping your Valuables Safe
You always hear horror stories of people on trips having their valuables or money stolen. It happens all the time, but is there a way to prevent this from happening to you? Of course there is!
Most hotel descriptions will mention if they have a safe available for you to use. However, if there isn’t one listed the first thing you should do when you arrive is ask if there is a hotel safe you can keep valuables in. The hotel safe is one of the securest places to put anything important, for example,your passport. If you do not have access to a hotel safe, or you need to have everything you travel with at you finger tips at all times, how can you keep your money and valuables out of the hands of thieves?
Keeping any money, valuables, or jewelry out of site is a very important measure in keeping them safe. If your money is out on the nightstand next to bed, or you leave your earrings in the bathroom you are sending an open invitation for any dishonest person to steal it from you. If nothing else try and keep your valuables out of sight. As the saying goes 'Out of site out of mind.’
Something else you should consider - other then just hiding anything you don't want stolen deep in the depth of your suitcase - is to hide your valuables in inanimate objects. Something like a secret hidden jewelry box inside a hollow book, or a pop can with a secret built in compartment. These types of clever products can easily be bought or made by anyone and can be the difference between losing your money and going home with everything intact. A hidden jewelry box is something that any person doing some quick digging would not even think about trying to find.
If you are traveling through a foreign country and you are worried about having your pocket picked I would invest in a good Travel security money belt. A money belt is easy to put on under you clothes and is basically undetectable by thieves. This is generally better than leaving valuables and money in a purse or fanny-pack. Any slightly talented pickpocket can easily reach inside a purse in close quarters and lift whatever they want.
So be safe on your travels, keep everything important close to you. That way at the end of the day the only stories you will have about your trip is that you had a wonderful time!
