Florida wants 2 More Weeks of Summer Vacation

Today in Florida The House of Representatives will vote on a Senate proposal that would prevent schools from opening any earlier than Aug. 20.

In Alachua County, school started this year on Aug. 15, and officials planned to start school Aug. 14 in 2007. In Gilchrist County, for comparison, school started Aug. 5 this year.
The later school start date was lobbied for by parent groups, who wanted time for family vacations, and officials in the tourism industry, who wanted students to be able to work summer jobs throughout the traditional summer-break tourism season.

I could not imagine starting school on August 5th! Summer is just really getting started, the days are at their hottest, the beach is at it's fullest, the days are long, everyone is outside. I don't understand why people would want to rush the kids back into school. I think kids would just be less likely to work hard when all they can think about is how beautiful it is outside. I know I had enough trouble thinking about math when we started on August 30th, never mind the 5th.

Remember the days when school started in September? Man that was nice, August is for relaxing, people should know that!

As a recent college grad this will be my second August where I dont have to go to school after it. But a couple of years ago if I had to start school on august 5th, id be mighty angry! Plus, the money I made that august before my last year at my summer job was important to pay for school.
