Sydney's Best Drag Show!
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, was filmed at the Imperial Hotel in October 1994, so no prizes for guessing its speciality. It's open seven nights a week, but the most popular nights are Friday and Saturday, which feature a special "Priscilla" drag show throughout the night.
The hotel is the most popular gay venue in Newtown and attracts a mixed gay/straight/lesbian audience to the drag shows in the cabaret bar, while in the Cellar bar (which plays trash-disco and handbag house) the boys prevail. Lesbians usually head for the quieter lounge bar with pool tables. But, regardless of sexual orientation, the Imperial Hotel puts on a great show. Drag queens flamboyantly prance through the stage while lip syncing to some of entertainment's classic tunes, like Elton John's "Rocket man". Expect to be entertained to the fullest, as the drag queens put on ensemble after ensemble of hilarious proportions.
After the show, the general cabaret bar turns into a dance floor and it's a disco free for all. Whether gay, straight, bisexual, or just plain confused, you will find a warm and welcoming atmosphere. I was there with several straight girl-friends and we had an absolute blast singing along to every tune and laughing until it was painful.
It's free to get in and the drinks are still reasonably priced. All visitors are likely to discover a warm welcome and a friendly atmosphere.
