Melbourne Synagogues
During my undergraduate university experience in Canada, I spent two years as a live-in-nanny for a family that was half Jewish and half Christian. During that period of my life, I became interested in learning more about various religions and cultures. When I came to Melbourne, Australia, I decided to discover the Melbourne Synagogues.
Melbourne's Jewish community is largely located in the St. Kilda district. This is where visitors can learn more about the home of th Hebrew Congregation, which is the oldest and biggest synagogue in Melbourne. The original kehilla formed in 1841 was moved into this large building in 1930. The dome came later. This Victorian structure has popular for visitors ever since. Regardless of your own history or religious beliefs, synagogue artifacts and its startling architecture offer a poignant landmark.
Other Melbourne synagogues include Temple Beth Israel, a Liberal synagogue that seats more than 2,000 people. The St. Kilda Hebrew Congregation is more in classic style. The Kew synagogue is the newest and most modern temple, in terms of inside and outside appearances. All of them welcome visitors and information about services is posted outside each one.
Kosher restaurants and grocery stores are easily accessible in the St. Kilda area as well. Whether before or after a service, you may be interested in eating a kosher meal. If you desire to learn about food options, local people are friendly and often willing to offer information. You can also read very clearly-written labels in various languages.
