Great Ocean Road Marathon

Who would've thought that outdoor and running enthusiasts could take in yet another spectacular international running competition in Victoria in May.  For those who aren't up to the 45km marathon, options included a half marathon, 14km and 6.5km run-walk along different segments of the Great Ocean Road.  All courses ended in Apollo Bay, but of course, some started as far away as Lorne, which is a 3 hour drive from Melbourne. Why not take such an event in as a spectator?

Well, the Great Ocean Road is a very scenic place with quaint towns interspersed all along the way. The marathon event blocked regular traffic, but to stop and enjoy a picnic along the beach in Angelsea, Lorne, Skeen's Creek, Apollo Bay or any of a number of  other places. This makes it a unique opportunity to run this magnificent icon without vehicles driving by.  The whole Apollo Bay running festival is about experiencing the coastline. I'm fortunate to have friends in Skeen's Creek.  In the future,  I'll have to plan to be in the area for the running festival and also take in some of the shorter distance races.

The thing about outdoor sporting events is the opportunity for comaraderie.  Race competitors included individuals from different parts of the world.  This is one reason why people feel so welcome to visit and experience the multiculturalism.  Whether or not you're a runner yourself, a basic jogger or someone who simply enjoys the scenery, the combination of the sporting event and natural beauty are the sort of thigns that make a vacation memorable. This was the 3rd annual Marathon organized by the Apollo Bay Chamber of Commerce and Tourism.  It will occur about the same time next year.  Why not plan ahead to be in the area to take it is as a competitor or spectator? Come see discover south west Victoria.
